What is Kabaddi?
Kabaddi is a high-intensity combative sport. It’s intense, physical, and raw — think of it as a mix of wrestling, boxing, football, and rugby, all rolled into one — with no protective gear. It’s a tradition, a test of courage, and a deep-rooted part of Punjabi culture. Played in villages, stadiums, and now global arenas, kabaddi is one of the oldest contact sports in the world, rooted in South Asian tradition, especially in Punjab, India.
While there are different forms of kabaddi, the circle style, also known as Punjab-style kabaddi, is the most powerful and traditional version of the game. It’s fast, physical, raw — and it’s the heartbeat of Kabaddi California.
🔄 The Basics: How It's Played
Circle style kabaddi is played outdoors on a circular field (as opposed to the rectangular mat used in standard style). It's played for a period of 40 minutes with a 5 minute break (20-5-20). Here's how it works:
-
Two teams face off, usually with 7 players each. There are usually 5 or 6 stoppers. There are 3 or 4 raiders. However, it can vary.
-
One player (the raider) enters the opponent's half and attempts to tag or wrestle opponents, then return safely. The raider has 30 seconds to touch one of the 4 linked stoppers and return through the white line with sandbags.
-
The stoppers try to tackle and hold the raider down to stop them from scoring. There are 4 stoppers linked with each other. Only one of the stopper can stop the raider.
All points are 1 point except for the first point. That first point is 1/2 or 0.5. It insures that there is never a tie.
Matches are intense, with big hits, crowd energy, and tactical battles between raiders and stoppers. It’s a mix of wrestling, strategy, and street smarts — all in one.
🌍 From Punjab to California
Kabaddi was born on the dusty grounds of rural Punjab, where it was more than just a game — it was a gathering, a celebration, a rite of passage.
Over time, Punjabi immigrants brought kabaddi to countries like Canada, the U.K., Australia, and the U.S. — and in California, it’s been growing fast.
Kabaddi California was created to showcase this movement. We represent the athletes, the fans, the culture, and the global reach of a sport that's ready to take the next step.
🤝 The Culture Lives Through Us
This isn’t just about competition. Kabaddi teaches discipline, brotherhood, and pride in where you come from. Every time we wear our logo, step onto the ground, or post a highlight — we're doing a representation of Punjab, power, and passion.
🏅 Title: Positions in Circle Style Kabaddi
In the high-energy world of circle style kabaddi, every player has a role — and every role comes with its own power, pressure, and pride.
If you’ve ever watched a kabaddi match and wondered, "Who's that guy charging in?" or "Who just tackled the raider to the ground?" — this one’s for you.
Let’s break down the key positions in circle style kabaddi and how each one contributes to the game:
🏹 1. Raider
The raider is the star of the offense — the one who crosses into the opponent’s territory with nothing but skill, speed, and guts.
-
Goal: Tag or wrestle with stoppers and return safely to their side.
-
Skills needed: Agility, speed, decision-making, and strength under pressure.
-
Famous for: Highlight plays, slick footwork, and dramatic escapes.
In every match, the raider has the crowd on edge — one slip, and they’re caught. One move, and they score.
🛡️ 2. Stopper
The stopper is the wall, and the anchor.
-
Goal: Tackle and stop the raider before they escape.
-
Position: Usually stands in front, ready to engage the raider.
-
Skills needed: Raw strength, timing, technique, and grip.
A good stopper doesn’t just tackle — he dominates. He reads the raider, shuts down their move, and flips momentum.
🔄 3. In-Corner & Out-Corner
These players support the stopper and help trap the raider with strategic positioning.
-
In-Corner: Closer to the stopper, ready to step in fast.
-
Out-Corner: Closer to the edge of the circle, prevents escapes and wide moves.
-
Skills needed: Speed, coordination, alertness, teamwork.
Corners are the unsung heroes. Their footwork and reactions can change a match instantly.
🔁 4. All-Rounder
The all-rounder is exactly what it sounds like — a player who can raid and stop.
-
Role: Fills in wherever needed — clutch raids, solid stops, or backup plays.
-
Skills needed: Balance, awareness, versatility, stamina.
Every great team has one — the player who can step up when the game’s on the line. This position is rare. This happens when there are injuries or not enough players.
🎯 Team Strategy Matters
Circle kabaddi is not just about strength — it’s about chemistry and timing. A raider can’t succeed without support. A stopper needs backup. Great teams are built on knowing your role and playing it to perfection.
At Kabaddi California, we salute every position — every role matters. Whether you’re a rising raider or a proud stopper, you’re part of something bigger than the game.
